We awoke to a glorious morning that gave us much hope for a sunny day. The view from our window again confirmed the beauty of Achensee, a lovely location for our previous day’s rest.

We left Pertisau by walking down a quiet lane filled with holiday homes. Coming to a carpark we entered the expansive Falzthurntal Valley on a paved trail. A striking array of mountains ahead beckoned us on to the day’s adventure.

The wide meadows gave way to a coniferous forest and between the many trees we would occasionally have stunning alpine glimpses.

Two miles along we arrived at Falzthurnalm and its quaint 200 year old Sennhütte which was not to be missed.

The hut was so charming that we felt the need to stop in for a coffee and just soak up the ambiance. The hostess and her mother joined us, providing delightful descriptions of the local wildlife and tales of the area and its history.

Our path soon opened up into more lovely meadows with Falzthurnjoch (right) and Sonnjoch (left) looming above us. They were becoming progressively grander as we journeyed on.

As usual, we once again were able to have a friendly chat with the locals.

To our surprise we came upon a large hotel, Hotel Gramai Alm. There were many tour buses which had disgorged herds of people. We skirted around the crowd, soon said good-bye to our leisurely track and began some more serious hiking as we zig-zagged up the circ at the head of Falzthurntal.

The lovely valley presented a good excuse to stop for a brief rest on the ascent.

Back at higher elevation we were once again in chamois territory.

The trail is sandwiched between impressive mountain peaks with the meadows far below.

Finally the end was in sight as the last zig zag was tackled and Lamsenjochhütte appeared!

Rounding the last turn, we were rewarded with final access to our home for the night. On a warm afternoon, which this was not, this porch would be packed with hikers enjoying the beverage of their choice, meeting new friends and recounting their adventures.

On this day the party was moved indoors.
