Kufstein and Kufstein Fortress

Although our rest day was “officially” in Kufstein on the Adlerweg, we stayed in Kiefersfelden, Germany, just two miles by train and cheaper than its touristy neighbor. Our hotel was the very comfortable Hotel Zur Post which was a short three minute walk from the train station. Not wishing to experience the heat of the day, we headed into Kufstein early to begin our exploration of the town. Just a short stroll from the river was the charming Romerhofgasse, the heart of the Altstadt (old city). Many shops were brandishing traditional wear and all exhibited beautiful mural art, called Lüftlmalerei, typical in the Tyrol.

One could take a horse-drawn carriage ride to tour the town.

Kufstein Fortress has a commanding position overlooking the town and the Inn River. The earliest mention of this structure is in 1205.

As we strolled through the Altstadt, Tyrolean music was playing nearby. We followed the sound up the hill and discovered a band playing on the steps of a church for some local function. We grabbed a cup of coffee and sat down to enjoy the music and ambiance of the town.
