We were delivered back to Trefonen to begin today’s walk. Unfortunately, we began the walk in the rain for the first two hours, during which we were able to visit with a local (hedgehog) who did not invite us in for a cup of tea, but had a cute home nonetheless.
The rain stopped just in time to have a lovely view overlooking Chirk Castle, built by the English King Edward 1 in 1295 as one of a chain of fortresses across Northern Wales to control the recently conquered Welsh.
Someone in the area must raise pinto horses as most of the nearby pastures were abundant with pintos.
We had quite a climb up to Chirk and at the top the path continued through a pasture that had a large sign reading “Bull in Field”. The farmers are required to warn walkers of this possible danger; however, there is no way to tell if the bull is friendly. We spent a little time observing said bull and decided that he looked pleasant enough to risk a mad dash through his pasture. With our nerves of steel we walked right in front of him and his “women” with no incident. After living through that ordeal we sat down in the bull’s pasture for a quick snack.
After our snack we descended into Trevor and walked the Llangollen Canal’s path, viewing the picturesque canal boats.
This was a very pretty and gentle part of the path. As we rounded a corner, the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct came into view.
The aqueduct was built between 1795 and 1805 by Thomas Telford and carries the LLangollen Canal across the River Dee. Although it is 126′ above the Dee with a narrow bridge path paralleling the aqueduct’s canal, it is not scary and quite interesting.
The final 4 1/2 miles of today’s trail followed the Llangollen Canal to Llangollen, where we easily found the lovely Victorian B&B, Glasgym B&B.
John and Heather Spicer were our most cordial hosts. A friend from a neighboring town whom we had met years ago came by to visit with us. John, as he was serving our tea and cake in the lounge, graciously asked if she would like to join us for dinner at the B&B. A happy and lovely evening was had by all before retiring to our comfortable, charming rooms.
I couldn’t resist a food shot to just give a glimpse of how delicious the dinner was!
